Right Reverend Bishop John Alphonsus Ryan of Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu has bemoaned unscrupulous behavior of some people in the country who cut down trees which he said causes havoc between human beings and the environment.
The Bishop said this during mass at Holy Cross Parish, Citing Chikangawa forest as one of hugely destroyed forest in the country the Bishop said such behaviors terminates ecosystem which hastens massive destruction of the environment.
“God gave as the power to look for his creation on his behalf and not to destroy it, therefore it is our responsibility to take care of the environment which God gave us for free.
Let’s refrain from setting bushfire in forests anyhow and cutting down trees because this is disrespect to Gods will on creation”, said the Bishop.
Adding he said, “We know that cars, motorbikes and factories gases have great impact on the environment because the gas contaminate the air we breathe which causes airborne disease”.
With emphasis on the need to restore the environment by planting more trees the Bishop cited the encyclical letter, Laudato Si’ by Pope Francis which expounds on care of God’s creation, the bishop called upon people to respect God’s creation.
“Brethren Pope Francis in his letter urges us to take care of the environment, stable atmosphere builds peace and harmony between human beings and the environments which also help us to sustain our lives every day.
We thank the first missionaries who planted trees in our parishes, today i ask everyone to take part in planting trees especially in this tree planting season that we have launched”, added the Bishop.
After the Eucharistic cerebration the Bishop presided over and launched a tree planting season program for the Diocese, all Parishes in the Diocese received a sum of 50,000 kwacha as a start pack to buy tree seedlings.
In random interview with Radio Tigabane at Nkhamenya Christians acknowledged the development and vowed to work with Bishop Ryan in rehabilitating the environment by planting trees in their respective residential areas.
Since his consecration as Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu, Right Reverend Bishop John Alphonsus Ryan has repeatedly encouraged Catholic faithful’s and people of good will on the importance of conserving the environment.
